Checking Out: Con Moto Violins A by Performance Samples

Trying to do everything (be a Jack of all trades) has its trade-offs and Con Moto proves it’s best to do a couple of things extremely well. This sample library series is the ultimate cure for stale sampled string section sustains and quite good at faster legato passages as well!

Checking Out: Con Moto Violins A by Performance Samples

Performance Samples proudly states in the logo that their instruments are “not for purists”. In that spirit, the Con Moto series is not for everyone. As a specialist’s tool, it only does a few things. But it does them very well.

Con Moto Violins A normally sells for $209.00
The library is currently on promotion, get Con Moto Violins A for $179.00 until March 10th, 2020 from Performance Samples

CON MOTO – VIOLINS A Interface

Con Moto proves sometimes it’s best to do a couple things extremely well. Because trying to do everything at once leads to (Jack of all) trade-offs.

I spent a couple weeks recording different clips and experimenting with Con Moto Violins A and B. While it wasn’t love at first sight I came to understand the gap they fill in the market and how composers might come to embrace them.

While the sustains are full of life even at quiet dynamics, and the legatos are consistent and never distracting, the note releases are perhaps the best part of the instrument. What baffles me a bit is the note attacks. I’d definitely edit out (in audio) the anticipatory quiet prep tone that begins new notes in most cases. I’ve needed to do it with Fluid Shorts, to get clean note starts when new phrases begin. It seems to me that with such precise phase-coherent editing, it should be “relatively simple” to provide a defined note start when the bows begin to pull across the strings.

Aside from that caveat, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Con Moto series to all who seek the passionate, sweet, emotional sustains and releases. And don’t be shy about throwing ornaments or other faster non-ostinato legato figures at Con Moto either. Check out the video to hear a few examples across the range of the violin section. These examples should show Con Moto is more than a one trick pony, but it’s not an all-in-one package either.
