Fire Strings couldn’t be farther from a standard string library that I was expecting. Though the controls may seem intimidating at first, the library includes a huge collection of presets good for starting points or for your final sound. Simply spamming the randomize buttons can yield some interesting results and is sure to be a constant source of surprises and inspiration.

Review: Fire Strings by Divergent Audio Group
When I first heard about this library, I was expecting another orchestral string library and was eager to see what kinds of things this company was doing. To my surprise, what the instrument ended up being couldn’t be farther from a standard string library. This was a wonderful thing. Fire Strings by Alliance Divergent Audio group is a huge collection of strange, interesting, and warped sound sources derived from both electric violin as well as electric guitar. These sounds combine together through the use of their unique fire strings engine to create a truly unique sounding instrument perfect for sound design scoring and countless other musical applications.

Thoughts

Once I realised that the library wasn’t an orchestral string library, I curriously dug into it unsure as to what kinds of things to expect. Immediately I had a smile on my face. Fire Strings is a musical sound design instrument that combines a huge collection of sound sources from both a solo electric violin as well as an electric guitar. All the sound sources have been manipulated and mangled to create a series of super interesting and ear catching sounds. The sounds are grouped into several main categories. There are Tonal sounds, either created from more standard techniques on the instruments, or from more extended techniques. These include sustains, tremolos, harmonics, and many many more. There are rhythmic sounds, which tempo sync to your daw. These on their own make a great starting point for an entire track. There are Riser, which are wonderful for building tension or building towards a new section. Finally we have the aptly named Twisted sounds. These, as the name imply are extremely unusual and come as a result of the initial sound sources being mangled beyond recognition.

The heart of the instrument’s engine is the ability to fade between two sound sources at once. This is done through the use of a step sequencer. The instrument comes with several presets, or you can quickly create your own. Though the sounds on their own are interesting, the true power of Fire Strings seems to reveal itself when you begin combining sounds to create extremely unique combinations.

In addition to simply blending sounds together, the instrument serves as a sound design tool in and of itself in the form of the large collection of extremely customizable FX that it includes. Clicking the FX Rack button takes us to a new panel where we are able to apply FX such as delays, convolution reverbs, tape saturation, drive distortion, and more. Most instruments would stop here, being satisfied that you could mangle your sounds using these FX. Fire Strings takes it one step further! Clicking the FX Sequencer button takes us to a third panel allowing us to modulate the way in which the FX are applied to our sounds over time allowing us to create a dynamically changing soundscapes.

If all of this control is intimidating, then have no fear! Fire Strings includes a huge collection of preset instrument snapshots which can be used either as a starting point, or as a final sound! In many cases, parameters and options include a randomise button. Simply spamming the randomise buttons can yield some interesting results. This is the kind of instrument that is sure to be a constant source of surprises and inspiration. It is sure to add new life and spice to the template of any media composer as well as musicians of all sorts.
