Thoughts

Time+Space bring us their first signature series sound set for Omnisphere 2 in partnership with the truly gifted composer, sound designer and performer Ian Boddy.

Ian has been a giant on the electronic music scene for decades and is no stranger to combining his arsenal of classic analogue gear and sound design talents to create library and film music along with his renowned soft synthesizer presets and libraries.

Dark Ambience brings us an amazing set of presets for Omnisphere 2 that focuses on the darker tonal side of his sound design and offers a real first for Omnisphere 2 – a set of sounds created entirely from vintage analogue gear. Ian used a select set of gear from his massive arsenal of vintage and modular hardware.

Dark Ambience features sounds hand crafted from historic synthesizers such as the Roland System 100-M, Doepfer A-100, VCS3, Analogue Systems Modular, Minimoog and Moog Voyager and a host of other classic gear.

a
Dark Ambience is divided into several categories with the main focus being on Scapes (both Textural and Chaotic), Synths, Transitions, Sweeps and ARPs. I found a couple of things very appealing about Dark Ambience; it makes extensive use of the Mod Wheel for sound morphing with the LFOs, Modulation, Envelope and Layer Fades depending on the specific patch. The other big plus for me was the excellent detail on Mod Wheel usage provided in each patch.

Dark Ambience is one of the first preset sets that takes advantage of the new Granular effect in Omnisphere 2 and provides additional shaping capabilities of Ian’s raw sounds using the other new effects in the Omnisphere 2 FX Rack. These effects are a critical part of what makes the sounds so amazing, fluid and flowing.

The sounds range from haunting soundscapes and awesome filter sweeps to brooding pads and plucks, chaotic electronics and sparse environments to pulsing and evolving textures. This is the perfect tool for a wide variety of applications including cinematic scoring and trailer work where the composer needs dark and ominous sounds or for the electronic musician looking to add tonal complexity to their work.

There are sounds here for everything needed to create tension, invoke fear or add daunting sound effects to dramatic moments.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a long-time fan of Ian’s work and a long-time Omnisphere user.

Dark Ambience is a really exciting new addition to my own personal setup and has already found its way into my latest recording project. As with all of my reviews, I would encourage you to check out the official demos to make sure that this is the right tool for you.
